“Originally, we explored ice skating to compliment holiday shopping, but quickly realized how unsustainable ice rinks are due to the energy necessary to keep the ice frozen,” said event co-organizer Katie Falbo of Cultivate Events. “When we happened across roller skating, we knew we’d found the perfect activity!”

“We love that we live in a city with such an outstanding community college – one that supports sustainable education, eco-entrepreneurship, and contributes so much to the small businesses that we promote,” said Falbo. “We hope to raise a few thousand dollars for the Center through this fun event.”

For many people, roller-skating is a blast from their past – and a chance for younger generations to experience the glorious days of roller disco. Awesome music, disco lights and an emcee will all be part of the action. But this is no ordinary emcee. The Godfather of Skating, the Pied Piper of Skating, the Mayor of Golden Gate Park – these are just some of the accolades bestowed on David Miles.

“The Godfather of Skating, David Miles Jr., has spent his entire career promoting roller skating on and off the rink,” said Falbo. “His company, DMJ Skate Marketing, was the perfect fit for our event and will help create the fun and funky vibe we’re looking for.”

Week-day ‘open skate’ nights will include themes where skaters can look forward to lighting up the floor to Pop, 80’s, Rock n’ Roll, Black Rock City Roller Disco, Hip Hop, and a special Saturday Night Fever with local DJ Darla Bea. Costumes will of course be strongly encouraged!

As for the shopping, Falbo teamed up with event co-organizer Valerie Velasquez of Meet Your Makers in order to offer up locally made, utilitarian products and goods that can help meet all of your holiday shopping needs.

Event sponsors include local roller skating manufacturer Rollerbones, Whole Foods Market, Fishbon, Lucidity Festival, MTD Santa Barbara, SB Signs and Graphics, The Sentinel, and ParentClick.com. LoaTree is also an event sponsor.

Skating will take place on both weekends and throughout the week. Vendors will be on-site on the weekends of the 14th and 21st only. For event details and pricing, visit the Shop N’ Roll website. Don’t forget to check out the event on Facebook!

Be careful out there, bring your funkiest skate moves (don’t let down the Godfather), and happy shop/skating!
